Frequently Asked Questions — ALT Codes

What are ALT codes?
ALT codes are keyboard shortcuts used to input special symbols that aren't on standard keyboard layouts. In Windows, they are typed by holding the Alt key and typing the code number on the numeric keypad.
How do I use ALT codes in Windows?
Turn on Num Lock, hold down the Alt key, type the code number on the numeric keypad (e.g. Alt + 169 for ©), and then release Alt. The symbol will appear at your cursor.
Do ALT codes work on Mac?
No, macOS uses Option (⌥) key combinations instead of Alt codes. Our chart shows the Option key shortcuts for Mac users when available.
Can I copy symbols directly from the chart?
Yes. Simply click on any symbol in the grid to copy it to your clipboard instantly, saving you from remembering the codes.
