The Ultimate Guide to ALT Codes and ASCII Characters: History & Usage

In modern writing and digital work, typing special symbols like registered trademarks (®, ), accented letters (é, ñ), currency signs (, £, ¥), or directional arrows (, ) is a daily requirement.

Yet, physical keyboards only feature roughly 100 physical keys. How can we input thousands of distinct typography glyphs with numerical sequences? The answer lies in the ASCII standard and the classic ALT key combinations.


1. The Origin: What is ASCII?

Created in 1963, the ASCII standard (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) established a universal method for computers to translate electrical numbers into readable text characters.

  • The initial specification used 7 bits (128 possible character slots), containing English uppercase and lowercase alphabets, numerals 0–9, and punctuation marks.
  • In the 1980s, IBM PC and MS-DOS operating systems expanded ASCII to 8 bits (Extended ASCII) with 256 code points (0–255), introducing accented vowels, box-drawing lines, and common currency symbols.

2. How Windows ALT Codes Work

To type a character that doesn’t have a dedicated key on a physical Windows keyboard:

  1. Press and hold the ALT key (left of the spacebar).
  2. Type the corresponding numerical code on the physical Numeric Keypad (Numpad) on the right side of the keyboard.
  3. Release the ALT key. The target character appears instantly.

3. The Evolution to Unicode and UTF-8

As computing expanded worldwide, 256 character slots were insufficient for global writing systems (Cyrillic, Arabic, Kanji, Hebrew, Greek).

The Unicode Consortium and the UTF-8 standard were created to unify every world writing system, currently supporting over 150,000 unique characters, ranging from complex mathematical notations to colorful modern emojis.
